Before donating your car
Car donations involve a vehicle title transfer, state motor-vehicle requirements and an acceptance decision by the charity. Get ready by checking that the vehicle is yours to transfer, locating the title and telling us about any damage or outstanding financing.
- Have the make, model, model year and vehicle location handy.
- Tell us whether the car starts, drives or needs towing.
- Disclose an outstanding loan, missing title or salvage history.
- Wait for COCAS acceptance before signing over title; ask about your state's release-of-liability and plate requirements.

Why COCAS
Your donation can create practical change
COCAS works to expand stability, opportunity and access to support. An accepted vehicle or boat may be used for an appropriate charitable purpose or sold to help fund our programs.
Use or sale is determined by COCAS after review. No particular end use of an individual donation is promised.
Tax information & title transfers
A qualified donation may be tax-deductible, but the amount and paperwork depend on IRS rules, the value claimed and what COCAS does with the donated asset. For claims above $500, specific acknowledgment rules generally apply, including Form 1098-C or its equivalent. A sale can limit the deduction to gross proceeds.
Do not sign over your title, remove plates, cancel insurance or deliver the vehicle until COCAS has reviewed and accepted the donation and explained the proper steps for your state.

Car & boat donation questions
What vehicles can I offer to COCAS?
We review offers for cars, SUVs, pickup trucks, vans, motorcycles, RVs, campers, boats, sailboats, watercraft and some trailers. Every offer is reviewed for title, condition, location, transport costs and the organization's needs.
Does the car or boat have to run?
No. You can submit an offer for a non-running vehicle or boat. Acceptance depends on condition, location, safety, towing or transport needs, and available resources.
Does COCAS pick up donated cars and boats?
You can request pickup in the donation form. COCAS will review whether pickup can be arranged in your area and confirm any logistics before a transfer. Pickup is not guaranteed or automatically free.
Can I donate a car or boat with a lien or without a title?
Tell us if you do not have the title or if a lender has a lien. We will review the situation, but COCAS cannot promise to accept a vehicle without clear, transferable ownership or lender approval when required.
Is my car or boat donation tax deductible?
Donations to eligible charities may qualify for a federal tax deduction, subject to IRS requirements and your circumstances. Special rules apply to vehicles and boats. For a claimed value over $500, Form 1098-C or a qualifying acknowledgment is generally required. The deduction may be limited to sale proceeds. COCAS does not determine your tax value or guarantee a deduction.
How soon can I donate?
